I have always hated Doctor Who, mainly because I am terrified of Daleks, but now I find myself wishing that I had a Tardis. Perhaps that programme was on to something after all because I have an urgent need for time travel. Not because I want to avert past alien invasions or because I can’t live without discovering who Jack the Ripper really was. No, I need time travel because I am sick of the current fashion landscape.
Glam Rock
I remember being excited and inspired by the excesses of 70’s glam rockers. All of that gold, glitter and glamour was the perfect antidote to the rather miserable economic times. Power cuts were plaguing the nation because of the striking miners and rubbish piled up on the streets left to rot for weeks whilst government workers also took industrial action. It was largely a drab and grey era but the stars of the time lit up our lives with their extravagance.
Punk Rock
Glam rock was followed by Punk rock with even more avent garde fashions and a rebellious spirit that galvanised the youth of the time. Then the 80’s arrived and the New Romantic movement bought us another era of excess, bling and extravagance. The likes of Boy George and Adam Ant inspired young people with their creative looks and it was a time of experimentation and flamboyance. Now what have we got?
Boring!
Everyone is walking around in uninspired jeans, t shirts and hoodies. Whether you are on the high street or in a club everyone looks the same and there seems to be a universal fear of standing out and of taking risks. It is all so boring! Perhaps the lack of imagination is indicative of a time when few of us have much to complain about.
New Hope
I have frankly been losing hope. As a youngster I considered myself to be relatively conservative in my dress but compared to the fashion landscape of today I was borderline outrageous. I have been going to gigs only to look at the stage to see that the performers are also wearing boring jeans and unremarkable t shirts. Rock stars used to be inspirational but now they were simply forgettable. That just isn’t Rock ‘n’ Roll. I had all but lost hope until the miracle of the gig I attended last Wednesday.
Glam is back
Glamour is not dead! I have found new inspiration for my wardrobe. The music industry has finally served up someone with the panache and daring that makes my heart sing and his name is Adam Lambert! I have been so inspired by his fashion choices that I have spent a frenzied week trying to track down similar styles to wear myself. This has only served to reinforce how meagre the choice is when you are on any kind of restricted budget.
If you can afford top end designer gear then you will have more luck, otherwise finding clothes that are genuinely different is a major mission. However, having spent hours and hours searching I have begun to hit pay dirt. I have found a fabulous pair of Karen Millen jeans which are similar to styles Mr Lambert wears. I have treated myself to a pair of leather fingerless gloves and have found a couple of promising jackets that I hope to get my hands on soon.
Lambert also wears some great jewellery which puts the perfect finishing touches to his outfits. Here I am finding that Celtic style Jewellery works a treat and that there are some interesting and affordable pieces out there.
My new outfit is almost complete and then I can really claim to be a paid up member of the Adam Lambert fan club. Apparently we are called Glamberts. How fabulous!
